Chapter Seven

Not that breaking his programming went well for either of us. Rule number one was that Beckett was not allowed to talk to Quincy because I was worried that he was going to do more damage than good.

Which was mainly after what happened on Sunday night when I walked into his room and found him wallowing. Rowan had done an impeccable job of fixing the place since Beckett had trashed it. It looked almost exactly the same. Minus the few things that were irreplaceable.

But I was a little bit done with Beckett and his dramatics – not that I totally blamed him – so my response wasn’t as understanding as it should have been. “This wouldn’t be such a problem if you just admitted you love her!”

“Of course, I fucking love her!” Beckett yelled, throwing a bottle at my head.

The number of bottles he was wasting on my head that year, it was a good thing he had more money than he could really spend in ten lifetimes. I was still getting sick of it. Sick of trying to be here for the arsehole when he just lashed out time and again. But he was my best friend, my box, my king. He was hurting and confused and maybe I could help him be happy for once.

I ducked my head to the side and the bottle smashed on the wall next to me. I tried not to make a big deal of the fact that it was the first time he hadn’t deflected or denied or avoided his feelings. “Well, you could have fooled me!”

Beckett whirled on me. “Don’t fucking start with your knowing everything about love bullshit. I get it. You wouldn’t have fucked it up. You’d be there for her. You’d move the fucking Earth itself for her if you had to. I don’t have the fucking luxury, J!”

“You don’t have the fucking balls,” I snapped. Oh, I wasn’t playing anymore.

We were both breathing hard, staring at each other like we were a second away from ripping each other apart. Grown men had been put in their place – namely six feet deep – for less slights against Beckett.

Like he knew I was right, Beckett crumpled and dropped onto his bed.

“Man, I know you’re scared. But she’s going to fucking walk if you don’t sack up.”

He ran his hand through his hair. “I can deal with a gun to my face. I can witness torture and not feel a fucking thing. Why can’t I do this for her?”

“Because they make us this way, B. He made you this way. Eighteen years of conditioning isn’t just going to be shaken in a couple of months, no matter how much you love her.”

A small smile crossed his lips, and a huff of a chuckle escaped him. “Fuck, I love her,” he breathed, as though it was news.

“You’ve been in love with her for years,” I reminded him flippantly. “That’s not news.”

He flopped back onto his bed, and I could see how drunk he was in the way his eyes fluttered closed.
